Question to ask before choosing a Daycare

This matters because handlers cannot safely manage what they cannot closely observe. At Southlake CritterCare, our dog-to-handler ratio is intentionally low, typically around 1 handler for every 6 dogs, depending on the group and the needs of the dogs that day. As a general rule, we believe a ratio higher than 1 handler to 15 dogs makes it very difficult to notice subtle body language, rising arousal, social tension, or early signs of discomfort before they turn into bigger problems. Good playgroup management is not just standing nearby. It requires watching, reading, interrupting, redirecting, and helping dogs make better choices in real time.

The number of dogs in a group matters just as much as the staff ratio. At Southlake CritterCare, our playgroups are intentionally kept small, usually around 5 to 15 dogs, depending on the dogs’ play styles, confidence levels, and overall stimulation level. Some dogs do beautifully in a slightly larger group. Others need a quieter, more controlled environment to feel safe and successful. We do not believe every dog should be placed into the same kind of group simply because there is space available. The goal is not to pack as many dogs together as possible. The goal is to create a group where dogs can relax, play appropriately, listen, recover, and enjoy themselves.

Grouping dogs is not just about size. Size matters, of course, but it is only one part of the picture. At Southlake CritterCare, we consider: Size and physical play style Age and maturity Confidence level Social skills Play intensity Sensitivity to pressure Arousal and stimulation levels How quickly a dog can recover after excitement The most important factor is often stimulation level. A large dog with soft social skills may be safer with gentle dogs than a small dog who plays intensely and constantly escalates. A young puppy may need playful dogs, but not dogs who overwhelm or correct too harshly. Good grouping is a moving target. Dogs change with age, experience, hormones, confidence, health, and stress. We continually adjust groups based on what we are seeing that day.

This is one of the most important questions to ask any daycare. At Southlake CritterCare, we do not rely on yelling, intimidation, leash corrections, spray bottles, shock collars, or aversive tools. We work heavily on recall, recall, and more recall. The goal is to teach dogs to respond to their name, disengage from the behavior, and orient to a handler before things escalate. We use redirection, movement, positive reinforcement, body blocking when appropriate, and handler engagement to help dogs reset. Unwanted behavior is usually information. It may mean the dog is overstimulated, tired, frustrated, anxious, socially confused, or in the wrong group. Our job is not just to stop the behavior. Our job is to understand why it is happening and adjust the environment so the dog can be successful.

Slowly, carefully, and one dog at a time. Puppies and timid dogs should not be dropped into an established group and expected to “figure it out.” That can create fear, defensive behavior, or bad social habits very quickly. At Southlake CritterCare, introductions are done thoughtfully. We typically begin with calm, socially appropriate dogs and watch the new dog’s body language closely. We look for signs of curiosity, avoidance, tension, recovery, confidence, and willingness to re-engage. For puppies, our goal is to build good social experiences without allowing them to become rude, frantic, or overwhelmed. For timid dogs, our goal is not to force interaction. Our goal is to create enough safety that curiosity can begin to replace fear. A good introduction process should protect both the new dog and the existing group.

Yes. Downtime is an important part of healthy social play. Dogs cannot stay in high-energy play mode all day without becoming overstimulated. Even friendly dogs can become irritable, pushy, reactive, or sloppy when they are tired. At Southlake CritterCare, we create natural breaks throughout the day through handler engagement, group rotations, calmer activities, indoor/outdoor adjustments, and structured resets when needed. Some dogs need more downtime than others. Puppies, seniors, anxious dogs, adolescent dogs, and dogs who play intensely may all need help taking breaks before they realize they need one. A well-run playgroup should not be chaos from start to finish. Healthy play includes pauses, recovery, and the ability to settle.

Yes. Every dog must complete an assessment before joining playgroup or boarding with us. This is not a quick pass/fail test. It is a careful evaluation of how your dog responds to the environment, handlers, new dogs, social pressure, excitement, and changes in stimulation. At Southlake CritterCare, we introduce dogs gradually and observe body language closely. We are looking at far more than whether a dog is “friendly.” We want to understand how they communicate, how they recover, how they handle frustration, whether they listen to social feedback, and what kind of group would set them up for success. Boarding is only available to dogs who regularly attend playgroup because familiarity matters. Dogs who already know our staff, our routines, and our environment are much more comfortable when they stay with us.

Be cautious of any daycare that cannot clearly explain how dogs are grouped, how behavior is interrupted, how many dogs are together, what the staff ratio is, and how new dogs are introduced. Also be cautious of vague answers like: “They just work it out.” “We separate by big dogs and small dogs.” “Someone is always watching.” “They play all day.” “We don’t really have problems.” Dogs are social, emotional, physical animals. Problems happen. A trustworthy daycare should be able to explain how they prevent issues, how they respond when something does happen, and how they communicate with owners. Transparency matters.

A good daycare should be able to answer these questions clearly: What is your dog-to-handler ratio? How many dogs are together at one time? How are dogs grouped? How do you introduce new or timid dogs? How do you interrupt unwanted behavior? Do you use aversive tools or corrections? Do dogs get downtime? Do you require an evaluation? How do you communicate concerns to owners? What do you do when a dog is overwhelmed? If the answers are vague, that is your answer.
